What to Do If You Need Foreclosure Counseling or Debt Management and Credit Counseling
May 17, 2009 - “One of the first things to do is stop being embarrassed about needing help,” says John
Willis, president of the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Savannah, Georgia. To do nothing will not help.
Do not pay anyone first (or “up front”) before they provide any service. It could be a scam to take what little
money you do have. There are many organizations with free or low-cost help. The government has passed measures
this year to provide assistance with foreclosure counseling. There are approved counseling services listed for
your area on the site for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). John also sheds light on the
differences between debt settlement and debt management services, the benefits of debt management programs and

Social Cost of Financial Illiteracy.
February 15, 2009 – Financial illiteracy is not a result of being stupid. It’s about the unwitting mistakes that
smart people make simply because we’re not financially educated. How many times have you uttered the plaintiff cry,
“If only I had known!” We’ve all read the headlines: “Auto Dealer Markups Cost Consumers Billions”; “Quick Tax Loans
Drain Millions from Consumers”; “Credit Insurance Overcharges Hit $2.5 Billion Dollars Annually” and know what they
mean to our pocketbooks. But do we realize the impact of financial problems on our personal and family lives? What
happens to our emotional well-being when we wreck our car and because we owe more than it’s worth have to make payments
on a car in the junkyard? Or we’re paying hundreds in credit card interest because of incorrect credit file information
we don’t understand. Jack Gillis, consumer advocate, author, director of public affairs for the Consumer Federation of
America, and president of Gillis & Associates and host Paul Berry talk about the social and emotional toll of financial
illiteracy and three simple keys to reducing financial stress.

November 23 , 2008 - Most of us have hear the sad tales of people who have given to charitable organizations
for years only to find out that most of their hard-earned dollars actually went toward the cost of administering the
organization and not to those for whom the money was intended. Laurie Styron is an analyst with the American Institute

Put Cash Flow on a Calendar
November 23 , 2008 - Mileah, a member of Kessler Federal Credit Union in Long Beach, Mississippi sent in a
great idea that will keep you on track and on time. Susan Tiffany, director of personal finance information for adults,
at the Center for Personal Finance, with the Credit Union National Association, in Madison, Wisconsin, described Mileah’s
system that will help you, too. You can use a computer and a spread sheet, you can use a notebook and pencil, you can even
find helpful pages on your financial institutions web site. No matter which style you prefer, the basics remain the same.
Use Mileah’s ideas; you will know when the next bill you need to pay is due, what you’ve been paying and how much you have
left to cover this next payment. Susan gives some handy tips on things you can do to stay on budget: ask your lender for
a different due date; use online bill pay to break large payments up into halves or thirds; set up automatic deposit into
a savings account meant just for bill paying. Whatever you use, the calendar method will help you see what you’re doing

Identity Theft: Now What’s the 911?
November 4, 2007 - Emergency! Dial 911. Crisis! Dial 911. Medical I.D. theft can have lethal

history? Doctors misdiagnosis your symptoms; choose the wrong remedy or surgical procedure. Adam Levin,
chairman of Identity Theft 911 and former director of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs,
briefs host Paul Berry on this and other currently “hot” types of I.D. theft, which affect people in
vulnerable life stages. One of the worst may be Synthetic I.D. theft. An almost impossible to track
identity is created from one person’s social security number, another’s birth certificate, still
another’s military service records, your credit card data and my medical history, and…it can take
years to unravel the tangled mess of this type of crime.

Freezing Your Credit:
December 16, 2007 - A security freeze gives you the choice to "freeze" or lock access to
your credit file against anyone who may be trying to open up a new account or to get new credit

thief cannot open a new account. This is one of the benefits of freezing your credit file. John
Ulzheimer, president of Credit.com Educational Services in Atlanta, Georgia, has the pros and
cons: should everyone freeze their credit; are there times when you should not? Ulzheimer gives
you the facts, so you can make an informed decision about your credit file.

Identity Theft: Now What’s the 911?
November 4, 2007 - Emergency! Dial 911. Crisis! Dial 911. Medical I.D. theft can have lethal
consequences. The thief accessed your records to assume your identity and now you’re stuck with his
hospital bill. Yes, it’s a problem, but what if his medical history becomes part of your medical
